google signed everyone on gmail up for it's social networking thing "buzz" and EPIC (electronic privacy information center) gave them a big FAIL on breaking privacy laws.
i havent had a sig in ages

Looks like google got too caught up in buzz, and released it without thinking about everything that might come from it.  Automatically every gmail subscriber was wrong, but perhaps they were just trying to get a good start on their new social networking which will have to compete with mega giants facebook and twitter.  Anyways they failed, but corrected it quickly.  Google Chrome = good.  Google Buzz = fail :)

I can't understand how they thought it'd be a good idea to have another social networking site when facebook/myspace really have taken care of that need in the casual population.

Money.  If Buzz actually took off, more ad space thus more $$$$
